UPDATE: Suspect charged following two-vehicle crash with St. Joseph County Police
Joseph Johnston UPDATE: The St. Joseph County Police Department has announced the suspect involved with Saturday night's crash, now identified as 31-year-old Joseph Johnston, has been formally charged.
Johnston is charged with Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated - Endangering a Person and Leaving the Scene of an Accident- Bodily Injury.
Police say on Saturday night, an officer had just finished his traffic detail for the Notre Dame game when he was traveling south on Ironwood.
That's when another vehicle, driven by Johnston, heading north, attempted to turn onto Dunn Road, pulling into his path and causing the collision.
Johnston fled the scene. Authorities say he was actually found in a wooded area near his home, not inside.
The officer involved was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and is now recovering at home.
ORIGINAL STORY: ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- A preliminary investigation shows that an officer with the St. Joseph County Police Department was traveling south on Ironwood when another vehicle, heading north, attempted to turn onto Dunn Road and pulled into the officer’s path, causing a collision.
The driver of the other vehicle fled the scene but was located inside a nearby residence. That individual was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for further evaluation. Investigators suspect alcohol may have been a factor.
The officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and is expected to be okay. The scene has since been cleared, and the investigation remains ongoing.
