SOUTH BEND, Ind. - UPDATE: Two people are dead, and a shooter is still on the loose as Thursday evening comes to an end.

South Bend Police told ABC57 they’re still trying to identify a suspect hours after the scene at the Quality Inn off Lincolnway West cleared.

The shooting happened around 2pm in the parking lot, beside the Quality Inn and Suites.

Police say two males were found dead outside a car.

Their names and ages have not been released, but family members on scene were notified.

South Bend Police say witnesses saw a suspect running away after shots were fired, but investigators haven't figured out if there was only one shooter.

Police actively searched through the area for about five hours in the afternoon, also dealing with a large crowd of people gathered near the scene, some climbing over the crime scene tape to try to get answers.

The crowd eventually gathered in the parking lot of the gas station next door, where they stayed for hours as police cleared the area.

Captain Tim Lancaster with the South Bend Police Department says what officers saw from the onlookers today shows the horror that acts of gun violence like this brings to everyone involved.

“It’s always difficult, it’s part of the job that a lot of officers, it’s not their favorite part of the job,” says Captain Lancaster, Division Chief for the South Bend Police Department. "To see the trauma on the family’s faces, it’s just not good.”

Police urge anyone with information on the shooting to either contact the South Bend Police Department or Michiana Crimestoppers at 574-288-STOP.
