The summer numbers are skewed by the cooler and wetter end to the season
SOUTH BEND, Ind -- If you talk to most people at the beginning of August about the summer weather, they would probably say "it was hot" and that was correct through the middle of August. South Bend was on pace for a Top Ten warmest summer. Also a dry summer, that was fighting off drought from a very-dry month of May.
The number to remember, 22, the number days this summer with highs +90 degrees and 22 nights with lows +70 degrees. We packed a lot of steamy weather from mid-June to mid-August. 22 is also double the normal number of 90 degree days in a year in South Bend, so a significant mark and one to watch each year. This year is the most number of 90s since 2020 (also 22). Every summer since 2019 (9) has seen and above normal number of 90 degree days.
The saving grace that broke the heat and the drought was at the end of August, when the rain came and temperatures cooled. Over three inches of rain and the 9th coolest, end to the month. The summer ends ranked as a Top 30 warmest, with near normal precipitation. Numbers that don't tell the full story of a steamy mid-summer.
