Suspect points gun at MCP officer before speeding off, crashing into garage

ABC 57

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- The Indiana State Police are investigating after a police chase in Michigan City ended with the armed suspect crashing into a garage near the intersection of S. Roeske and Killdeer Avenues.

Authorities say officers with the Michigan City Police Department were called to a shots fired complaint in the 1200 block of Elston Street on Wednesday, July 9.

"The suspect had left the scene prior to officers arriving, but an officer later located the suspect vehicle in the area of Broadway and Fairfield and initiated a traffic stop," ISP said.

"During that interaction, the suspect reportedly displayed a firearm, pointed it at the officer, and then drove away from the traffic stop at a high rate of speed. The officer initiated a vehicle pursuit that ended when the vehicle drove into a garage at the intersection of S. Roeske and Killdeer Ave."

The suspect was seriously injured and paramedics responded. They were taken to a local hospital before being taken to Chicago for treatment.

The ISP Crash Reconstruction Unit and Crime Scene Investigators also responded to the scene and an investigation is ongoing.

"Further information regarding the original call for service with the shots fired complaint will be released by the Michigan City Police Department later Thursday morning," ISP said.

"Identification of the suspect is being withheld due to potential criminal charges being filed."
