Suspect dies after 11-hour standoff with police in Kendallville
KENDALLVILLE, Ind. - A man is dead after a nearly 11-hour standoff with police in Kendallville, according to Indiana State Police.
The incident began at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when Kendallville Police responded to a shots fired report at the Drake Terrance Apartments on the city's south side.
When police arrived, the suspect allegedly started shooting at them from a second-story apartment balcony.
Gunfire was exchanged between the man and police before he retreated into the apartment and fired more shots from inside, reports said.
At one point, adjoining apartments and buildings were evacuated.
Attempts to speak with the suspect were unsuccessful, as the man never responded to officers' commands, according to reports.
At 6:05 a.m., a SWAT team entered the apartment and the suspect was taken into custody without further issues.
He was suffering from an injury with unknown severity, but died at the scene after life-saving attempts failed.
The man's identity has not yet been released.
Residents who were evacuated for the incident were eventually able to return to their homes.
