Strong storm left many in Cass County without power

UPDATE: As of 1 p.m. only roughly 690 Midwest Energy & Communications customers are still without power in Cass County. Coupled with roughly 190 Indiana & Michigan Power customers without power, there are about 900 customers in Cass County currently without power. 

ORIGINAL: CASSAPOLIS, Mich. -- Midwest Energy & Communications (MEC) reports that about 2,600 customers are out of power in southwest Michigan after strong storms swept through the area.

The largest outages are currently in the townships of Fabius, Penn, Porter (Cass County), Newberg, Wayne, Hamilton, Jefferson, and Calvin.

Please stay 50 feet away from any downed power lines as they may be live with electricity. Also, be aware of power lines on your property before you begin cleanup. For your safety and that of repair crews, please respect utility road closures.

Crews are beginning the process of assessing damage and restoring power.
