KALAMAZOO, Mich. — After 36 years in Kalamazoo and two terms in the Michigan Senate, Democratic State Sen. Sean McCann is making his case to jump to federal office in a competitive race for Michigan’s 4th Congressional District.

McCann is challenging Republican incumbent Rep. Bill Huizenga, who has held the seat for eight terms, in a contest that pollsters view as a key battleground in West Michigan.

McCann highlights his deep ties to the community, calling himself "Kalama-Glued" for nearly four decades.

"I've been Kalama-Glued for 36 years," McCann said. "It's a great place with a great quality of life."

During his tenure in the state Senate in Lansing, McCann backed several major tax relief measures aimed at working families and retirees, as well as statewide education initiatives.

"We put money into people's pockets with the Earned Income Tax Credit quintupling in Michigan, with repealing the senior pension tax," McCann said, noting that recent state budgets providing free breakfast and lunch for all Michigan public school students represent a major milestone.

That legislative record earned McCann the backing of Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who called him a crucial legislative partner.

"I love Sean McCann. He has been a phenomenal partner, and this community is lucky to have him," Whitmer said. "Making sure that we've got good people who are fighting for us, like Sean McCann in Washington, D.C., is essential."

Looking to Congress, McCann said his top national priorities include foreign policy oversight—specifically calling for a War Powers Resolution regarding ongoing conflicts involving Iran—alongside a domestic focus on lowering everyday living costs for working families.

"I want to stop the war in Iran. I think if we could flip the House and get that War Powers Resolution passed, we could start by getting that over with and go from there," McCann said. "There's going to be a Day One agenda, a Day 10 agenda, a Day 100 agenda to restore confidence to the American people that we're on their side."

At its core, McCann said his campaign aims to preserve economic security for middle-class families facing rising expenses.

"People living all kinds of different lives, but hopefully believing in that hope and that dream that they can have a decent job, a couple of vacations, own a home, retire with dignity," McCann said. "These are the things that are part of that American dream that can't slip away."
