South Shore trains implement speed restrictions due to extreme heat warning

ABC 57

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Shore Line will be adjusting its operating speed between certain stops after the National Weather Service issued an extreme heat warning for Northern Indiana that is effective until 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

The advisory warns of dangerously hot conditions with heat index values of around 100-105.

"High temperatures can adversely impact track, overhead wire, and other mechanical components," a SSL spokesperson said.

"Due to the extreme weather, the SSL has implemented a temperature-based speed restriction for South Shore tracks between South Bend and Portage/Ogden Dunes."

This means train maximum speeds will be decreased to minimize heat-related damage to track and overhead wire, and train delays are possible until the speed restriction has been lifted.

"Passengers please be at boarding stations on time in the event delays are less than expected," the spokesperson said.
