South Bend Residents Left Frustrated by Ongoing Post Office Closure

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Dozens of people pulled up to the post office today expecting to see it back up in business.

ABC57 spoke with a few of those individuals who didn’t know why it was closed.

On Aug. 25 a small fire broke out in the mail sorting area, the fire was caused by a light fixture and was quickly controlled, but the building sustained damage requiring repairs.

People living nearby are now becoming frustrated.

“I'm trying to mail for the third time my tax amendments,” said Becy Garza a South Bend resident, “I'm not too happy not at all because this is close to my workplace and I thought this would be convenient to come to, but nope not at all”.

“Man, I'd like to reopen now, but I don't know. Have you heard anything about that?” Said longtime South Bend resident Nate Reeder.

ABC57 received a statement from USPPS saying that the repairs to this post office are near completion and although it is not confirmed, they are expecting to reopen mid-October.

Operations here have been rerouted to the post office on South Michigan Street.

Some people went to the post office to use the mail drop box that used to be in the front of the parking lot, but has now vanished, and according to the statement provided by USPS it will be replaced once the building is open again.
