South Bend man facing charges for shooting death of child

NOW: South Bend man facing charges for shooting death of child

South Bend Police say Joseph Troupe of South Bend is facing three charges of neglect of a dependent and one charge of reckless homicide for the shooting death of a one-year-old child in South Bend Tuesday.

They say Troupe left a loaded gun in a bedroom and the one-year-old's young cousin apparently got his hands on the gun and shot the one-year-old in the head.

The baby boy was rushed to the hospital, but later died.

The two-year-old who fired the gun is Troupe's son.

Troupe is the uncle of the boy killed.

Police responded to the 800 block of Amhurst Ave. Tuesday

The incident happened in the 800 block of Amhurst Avenue about 12:40 Tuesday afternoon, where Troupe was staying with his sister.

During a news conference Wednesday afternoon police said Troupe told them he was in the living room with his sister and baby daughter when they heard a gunshot.

Police later found Troupe at his own home on Cushing Street in South Bend, and they detained him. They say they later found a handgun hidden inside a couch in Troupe's backyard.

Investigators say ballistics indicate it was the same gun used in the shooting and they say Troupe admitted to them that he hid the gun in his backyard.

Troupe was arrested Wednesday afternoon and will appear in court on the charges Thursday in South Bend.
