SBFD responds to two fires on Thursday morning

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Fire Department was dispatched to two separate fires during the early morning hours of Thursday, June 18.

Just before 1:30 a.m. Thursday, the South Bend Fire Department was dispatched to the 3000 block of Rue Montesquieu at the Jefferson Apartments for a reported structure fire.

When crews arrived, nothing was showing from the exterior, but firefighters detected a smoke odor. After investigating, they found a small working fire in the attic space. Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control. Everyone was able to safely evacuate, and there were no injuries.

The apartment unit below the attic where the fire was located was damaged, along with the first-floor unit, which sustained water damage.

Just before 6:00 a.m. Thursday, crews were called to the 2500 block of S. Michigan Street for a reported structure fire.

Upon arrival, crews found smoke showing from a second-story window of a vacant, boarded-up structure. Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control.

Both fires are under investigation.
