South Bend Civic Theatre hosts summer camp for students

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Every summer, the South Bend Civic Theatre hosts a summer camp for students. Campers can learn acting skills, build sets, and sing while they make new friends and get some stage experience.

ABC57 interviewed Josh Napierkowski, Director of Education and Amelia Claeys, Director of Outreach for the SBCT.

"The Civic is kind of the heart of our community. I view it that way. What we do in theater is we teach people how to work together." says Napierkowski. "We always start our camps as with giving our students the opportunity to work together as teams, and so we start every morning where camps from K through 12 get together, and they learn to work together."

Claeys goes on to say "And I think programs like ours help bring kids in and teach them in a safe way how to work together. What's appropriate in a classroom? What are the boundaries that we have to hold to make sure that you're safe? Not because we're mean, but because we want you to be able to succeed, and we want you to be able to stand up on the stage at the end of your camp and really be proud of what you are showing your parents, and what means working with a group of other students."
