South Bend man identified in officer-involved shooting
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit is investigating an officer involved shooting that resulted in the death of a suspect.
Police say the shooting happened around 3:25 a.m. near the Central High Apartments in South Bend. According to police, officers were originally called to the scene for reports of a man going through vehicles.
According to CMHU, the man who police killed was 53-year-old Eric Jack Logan.
Investigators say he was rifling through a car when a South Bend Police officer confronted him.
That’s when the man got out, and approached the cop with a knife, according to reports.
The man who was shot was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Clinton Timmons lives nearby.
“I was just down by the Trico down there when I heard the gunshots. I didn’t know what’s going on because there’s shootings all the time around here,” Timmons said.
While he heard the shooting, he’s just now learning exactly what police say happened.
The officer was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital.
The City of South Bend says that Mayor Pete is aware of the situation. The city issued a statement that says in part: “Our thoughts are with all those affected by this incident and their families.”
The name of the officer is being withheld at this time.
Timmons says the man who was shot is a friend of his.
“This morning when I found out who it was, it hurt my feelings pretty bad,” he said.
An autopsy is scheduled for June 17 in Fort Wayne.
