SBCSC unanimously agrees to appeal Clay High School Ruling
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Community school held a meeting where the board of school trustees have unanimously agreed to exercise the district's right to appeal the recent St. Joseph Superior Court ruling concerning Clay High School.
"I think there was a great deal of support that we've received over several weeks, not only once the decision was made on appeal, but before to say we would like you to hold on to Clay, and I think some of the important points to me include the fact that it's a community asset," said Stuart Greene, the School Board President.
The Board determined that pursuing appellate review is appropriate to protect the district's interests and ensure that the legal issues surrounding the future of Clay High School receive full judicial consideration.
"We want to bring joy to kids, and yes, I think we're all agreeing that that the kids should come first, but at the same time, I was hearing all about housing and property values, and you know, I don't think that's the prevailing view, but it is one that seems to persist if people are thinking about you know housing and the economics of this," said Greene
The Board believes that decisions concerning the future of Clay High School must prioritize what is best for students, families, and the South Bend community.
The district's continued use of the facility, together with its growing educational and athletic programming, reinforces its commitment to maximizing this publicly funded resource for the benefit of students.
Mansour Eid, the Superintendent said CTE programs are open to everyone, "so, I know they cannot afford to offer their students the whole gamut of CTE programming, and that's where we come in. We have been established, we have offered those programs, and we will continue to do so."
SBCSC will move forward with the appellate process while continuing its work to expand educational and extracurricular opportunities for students.
