Previous student speaks out about experience with former Concord teacher facing child porn charges
ELKHART, Ind. --- It’s been 7 years since Tara Lee walked the hallways at Concord High and almost thirteen since she’s had Andrew Cowells as a teacher, calling her experience one of the best classes she’s ever taken.
Now with allegations coming to light she’s saddened to see someone she once looked up to become someone she never expected.
“His teaching style was fun. He made you feel like you weren’t stupid if you didn’t know what was going on. To think that this is who he is now versus back then is crazy," said Lee, a 2014 Concord High graduate.
Cowells taught her and both of her younger sisters years ago becoming a teacher they all came to love and respect.
She tells me she was shocked to hear about his charges because he’s been one of her most impactful teachers.
I visited Cowells home earlier today to give him a chance to speak about the allegations against him which remained unanswered.
Lee says while he doesn’t deserve to teach again she hopes he gets the help he needs to move forward.
“I just want him to know that he does have a friend through all of this. I know like a lot of people are disappointed and I mean none of this is okay, but just because he was a great teacher doesn’t excuse him from any of this. I think what’s happening is necessary," said Lee.
Cowells has been with the district since 2001 and was officially terminated as of this Monday.
