12-year-old dead, 14-year-old injured in shooting near Indiana, Prairie avenues

UPDATE: A 12-year-old has died from injuries received in the shooting. He was identified by police as Josiah Small. 

A second victim, a 14-year-old boy, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. 

South Bend Police Department responded to the shooting around 9:30 p.m. Friday night near West Indiana Avenue and Prairie Avenue.

The South Bend Police Department Violent Crimes Unit is investigating. 

South Bend Mayor James Mueller released the following statement in regard to the shooting:

"As a community, we mourn and grieve yet another tragic loss of a young child’s life from senseless gun violence. My prayers are with his loved ones and classmates during this heart wrenching time. We need to come together as a community to stop this senseless violence and uplift our youth.

Justice must be served through our legal system. The South Bend Police Department will continue to share relevant updates as the investigation proceeds. I urge residents with information to share it with our investigators or anonymously through Crime Stoppers."

A GoFundMe has been set up to cover funeral and burial costs. 


ORIGINAL STORY:

The South Bend Police responded to a possible shooting in the area of West Indiana Avenue and Prairie Avenue just before 10 p.m. Friday.

ABC57 had crew on the ground around West Indiana Avenue and Prairie Avenue in the city's Southwest corner.

There were about a dozen cop cars surrounding the intersection in a residential area.
