Police investigating shooting on Hickory Road in Mishawaka

NOW: Police investigating shooting on Hickory Road in Mishawaka

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- A man was shot multiple times at an apartment on Hickory Road Tuesday afternoon.

Mishawaka Police responded to the scene around 12:30 p.m. after receiving multiple calls about a shooting.

When they arrived, they found a man on the ground of an apartment building with multiple gunshot wounds, reports said.

The man was transported to the hospital for treatment. Police said he is stable.

Dylen Niezgodski, a resident of the complex, came home to find the area surrounding his building completely taped off.

“I’m kind of shaken right now," Niezgodski said.

All residents in the building where shots were fired were evacuated, according to Niezgodski. Niezgodski is a dog owner and worried about his pets inside the complex during the evacuation period.

“If everybody was okay that I know in there or is my dogs okay," Niezgodski said. "That’s my big cause is my dogs because they’re very skittish to gunshots and thunders and stuff like that.”

Mishawaka police investigated the scene on Hickory Road collecting evidence, taking photos and speaking with witnesses.

Police also investigated a vehicle located in the parking lot of the complex, examining the items within the vehicle and took photos.

The area of the complex is usually quiet, according to Niezgodski. Niezgodski said he was surprised to see cops outside of the apartment building.

“Towards the back, yes…it’s usually quiet back here," Niezgodski said. "If we get anything, we get an argument or just a dispute or something like that.”

The suspect has not been located or taken into custody, police said.

“At this time we don’t believe there’s any danger to the community or the immediate community," Jason Stefaniak, Assistant Chief with the Mishawaka Police Department said.
