SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A man allegedly armed with a handgun and threatening suicide was shot and killed on the property of Coquillard Elementary School Friday afternoon.
South Bend Police were dispatched at 11:38 a.m. after Coquillard school employees reported a man with a handgun who was threatening suicide near the baseball fields.
According to reports, police attempted to de-escalate the situation for over 40 minutes but were unsuccessful.
At 12:30 p.m., shots were fired and the man was immediately loaded onto an ambulance and taken to Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
South Bend Community schools said no students were at the school during the incident, and the staff members who were in the building at the time are all safe.
St. Joseph County and Mishawaka Police are investigating the officer involved shooting.
