Officials investigating fatal crash near McKinley Avenue and Fir Road
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. – A driver led police on a chase Friday night through Elkhart and St. Joseph Counties before ultimately crashing into another car, killing one, according to Indiana State Police.
The crash happened around 7:39 p.m.
Initially a state trooper attempted to pull over the motorist who was allegedly driving 99 miles an hour eastbound on the US 20 Bypass.
The driver refused to stop, leading to a police chase, police said.
As the pursuit continued, it was learned that the Jeep was stolen, according to police.
The pursuit traveled through Elkhart and into St. Joseph County.
The motorists disregarded several stop lights on McKinley Avenue in St. Joseph County, police said. The driver then disregarded the stop light at Fir Road on McKinley Avenue, colliding with a car traveling southbound on Fir Road, police said.
The victim who was struck by the fleeing driving was transported to Memorial Hospital for serious injuries.
The driver of the Jeep is described as a black male wearing a dark jacket and grey sweatpants fled on foot.
Three passengers in the stolen Jeep were transported to the hospital for minor injuries. A fourth passenger in the Jeep was detained and questioned.
State police were unable to locate the driver.
