Police chase ends in crash in front of The Morris, shooting suspect arrested

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Police were led on a chase this afternoon that ended when the suspect crashed the truck he was driving right near the Morris Performing Arts Center.

"Around 2:15 p.m., our Warrants Division was in Mishawaka conducting a fugitive investigation when they located a potential vehicle the suspect was in," the SJCPD

"As they made their way into South Bend, our team asked South Bend Police to initiate a traffic stop. During that stop, around 2:30 p.m., one individual stepped out of the vehicle and cooperated with police. At the same time, wanted suspect 21-year-old Deshon Gates jumped into the driver seat and crashed right by the Morris Performing Arts Center."

The initial driver was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Gates was the last of the four suspects charged in a July 2024 quadruple shooting in South Bend is now in custody.

He was also wanted on felony drug violations out of Elkhart, he will ultimately be taken to the St. Joseph County Jail.

"Last month, Gates was charged with Possession of a Machine Gun and Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon in connection with a shooting in the 1300 block of Bissell Street last July that wounded four people," the SBPD said in a statement.

"As of today, all four suspects charged in the shooting are either in custody or their warrants have been served. SBPD thanks the SJCPD, Mishawaka Police Department and the US Marshals for their assistance on this case."
