UPDATE: One person injured, one dog dead following house fire on College Street
ABC 57 SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Just before midnight Monday, the South Bend Fire Department responded to the 1300 block of College Street for a reported house fire.
Crews arrived to find fire coming from the home's rear and backyard.
Officials say the residents were outside the home when firefighters arrived on scene.
Crews had the fire under control within 40 minutes.
One person suffering from burns was taken to Memorial Hospital before being flown to Indianapolis for further treatment.
Firefighters also rescued one dog from the home, while a second dog was found dead.
No other injuries were reported.
Fire investigators determined the cause to be a generator.
Fire officials say the heat and flames caused a nearby power line to come down.
SBFD encourages residents to use generators safely by keeping the following in mind:
- Always use generators outside in well-ventilated areas at least 20 feet from all doors, windows, and vent openings.
- Never use a generator in an attached garage, or any indoor space, even with a door or window open.
- Always turn generators off and let them cool down before refueling. Never refuel a generator while it’s hot.
- Keep generators away from combustible materials.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe use.
- Make sure your home has working carbon monoxide alarms and smoke alarms.
