Notre Dame's Markus Burton named ACC Rookie of the Year

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Notre Dame freshman and local basketball start Markus Burton was named ACC Rookie of the Year Monday.

This announcement comes on the heels of Notre Dame Women's Basketball freshman Hannah Hidalgo winning ACC Rookie of the Year last week.

The South Bend native, who was not initially on the ACC's Preseason Rookie Watch list, exceeded all expectations and earned the program's third-ever Rookie of the Year Award, first in the ACC conference.

Burton also earned Third Team All-ACC honors as well as the nod for All-Rookie Team.

“It’s really impressive with what (Burton) did and the stats he put up when he was No. 1 on the scouting report for every single ACC game. Burton ranked in the top-six in the league in points, assists and steals, of any class, and he got the opponent’s best defender marking him every single night,” shared Notre Dame Head Coach Micah Shrewsberry.

In league play, Burton ranked in the top six in scoring, assists and steals. He averaged 17.5 ppg, (sixth in the ACC), 4.8 assists (third), and 2.2 steals (first). Burton is the only rookie in the country averaging these numbers.

Burton broke the Notre Dame freshman scoring record with 535 points on the year, held previously by Troy Murphy's 519 points (1998-99).

The Irish enter ACC Tournament play on Tuesday, March 12, against Georgia Tech at 2 p.m. on the ACC Network.
