Nintendo fans line up outside Mishawaka GameStop for Switch 2 preorders

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Of all the collateral damage and fallout from President Trump's implementation of unconventional tariffs last month, the gaming community was one of the groups that did not garner much attention.
Earlier this month, Nintendo responded to new tariffs by delaying the United States preorder of the wildly popular Nintendo Switch 2 from April 9 to April 24.
While thousands of U.S. gamers waited with bated breath at their computers as the clock struck midnight and preorders opened, an overload of orders crashed many of the online retailers taking preorders.
As a result, about a dozen people were lined up outside the Mishawaka GameStop Thursday morning to place their preorder in person.
"I've been here since 7:30 this morning," said Tyler Ford. "I've been a huge fan of gaming; I've been playing games since I was a kid. My first console was the Gameboy."
On Wednesday morning, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa announced the company received an extremely large number of applications, approximately 2.2 million people in Japan alone.
"The tariffs are not fun for anybody," Ford said. "Luckily the system itself wasn't affected by it but the accessories and the amiibo, the little toys to life, they go up in price so I'm not too thrilled about that. I just hope everyone is able to get their hands on one, whoever is here, whoever is out there waiting in line as well. You know, happy Switch Day."
While the outdated cultural image of a typical gamer is a lonely person withering away in their parent's basement, the actual culture of gaming has changed dramatically over the last decade.
"My husband who came here with me and our nine-year-old son, it's our favorite thing to do as a family is just play games together it's a lot of fun," said Katie Hipsher.
"We kind of knew this was coming out eventually so we budgeted for it, so it's unfortunate that the accessories will be more expensive but we're just glad we were still able to do it, and they got some here, so we are able to enjoy it."
The Mishawaka GameStop opens at noon.
