New Prairie and Michigan City face off in final scrimmage before regular season
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- We've waited for months, but high school football returned to Michiana Friday. Teams across the area are gearing up for the regular season next week, but several local squads hosting scrimmages to get ready for week one.
High school football is finally back, and yes, Friday's game between Michigan City and New Prairie went in the books as a scrimmage.
But while score wasn't kept, it was a big opportunity for both teams to see just how ready they are for the regular season.
The two teams would go back and forth between offensive and defensive series, with no timed clock and no score
Let's check out some plays from Michigan City, first year starter Jaiden Baker, he had tons of confidence when we spoke to him, and you see why, airs the deep ball out to Meekael Laurent, and he's in for the score, what a pass from the junior!
More from the Wolves here, Chance Bernard, short pass to Dai'len Thompson, gets through the defense, turns on the jets and he's got reservations for six as Michigan City finds the end zone again.
Now to the Cougars, they've also got a junior quarterback starter, Charlie Luczkowski, he hands it off to Dayne Ryans, who's going faster than the drivers on the Dan Ryan, and powers his way past the pylon for a touchdown.
New Prairie offense back to work, Luczkowski spreading the love around, this time Kaden Reyes takes it in, plenty of action tonight for the Cougar running backs
After the game, both head coaches telling ABC57 there's a lot to like from Friday, but also room for improvement before the regular season begins.
"I loved our effort tonight, I thought we played physical football, and we executed at a pretty good level. Obviously, we've got some things to clean up, just little stuff, some missed assignments, some false starts, things like that, normal things that we'd need to clean up on any given Friday night, in order to be ready to go for an actual game next week," said Ryan O'Shea, New Prairie head coach.
"I thought we did a great job of kind of weathering the storm to begin with, I thought we made some explosive plays, and obviously, running the ball. It starts up front, being able to run the ball offensively and stop the ball defensively, so those are just things we've got to clean up, clean up some substitution issues and things like that but I thought it was a pretty good outing for us," said Charles Salary, Michigan City head coach.
These two teams will now break down the film and get ready for week one of the regular season next Friday.
New prairie will take on La Porte at home, and Michigan City will travel to Hanover Central.
