UPDATE: Dozens of vehicles involved in Indiana Toll Road crashes Monday, several injured

UPDATE THREE: The Indiana State Police reports around 11:17 a.m., Monday, ISP dispatch began to receive calls of crashes involving several vehicles blocking east bound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road near mile-marker 67.

Police say the area had snow and windy conditions which created limited visibility and slick, icy roads.

ISP's initial investigation determined vehicles began spinning out of control on the bridge when a pickup towing a trailer made evasive actions to avoid these vehicles.

The pickup truck then crashed into the bridge wall, before the trailer disconnected, coming to a stop in the eastbound lanes.

Police say this caused a chain reaction of crashes behind the original crash and involved dozens of vehicles.

This left traffic at a standstill for miles.

An additional crash involving multiple vehicles occurred near mile-marker 68 in the westbound lanes.

Eastbound traffic was diverted off at Exit 49 and westbound traffic was diverted at Exit 72 while crews removed crashed vehicles and crash investigations were done.

Eastbound and westbound lanes reopened at around 4:17 p.m.

There were several injuries reported and patients were taken to area hospitals.  None of the injuries are considered life-threatening currently.

UPDATE TWO: Shortly before 4:30 p.m., all lanes of the Toll Road are open. Traffic is moving slowly, expect delays.

UPDATE: As of 1 p.m., Monday, the Toll Road in St. Joseph County remains shut down between U.S. 20 and St. Joseph Valley Parkway.

Indiana State Police said conditions are treacherous with blowing snow leading to very poor visibility and bitterly cold temperatures.

Officials said troopers, first responders and tow companies are working to clear the road, but this stretch of the Toll Road will be closed for an extended amount of time.
