Mishawaka High School student shot late Christmas Day

SOUTH BEND, Ind.-- A 15-year- old Mishawaka High School student is in the hospital tonight suffering substantial injuries after being shot on Christmas Day at a home a few blocks away from Riley High School late Christmas Day.

Neighbors said what started as a wholesome holiday on Donald Street quickly escalated into a scary site.

Just before the clock struck midnight late Christmas Day crews were called out to the 300th block of Donald Street where the teenage girl was shot.

It is still unclear what led up to the incident, but officials say she is expected to survive her injuries.

One neighbor told ABC57 he looked out his window early to what he hoped was a holiday display.

“After enjoying Christmas Dinner with the daughters, grandkids, and watching the NBA games. I was surprised to see a lot of red and flashing lights like Christmas trees everywhere, because you know I’m thinking of Christmas not violence! So, I jump up and I’m like my God! What the heck is going on in the neighborhood? There are lights, and rescue trucks, and ambulances everywhere!” he said.

The South Bend Police Department is still investigating and has yet to release any suspect information to the public.

They said this is believed to be an isolated innocent, and they don’t believe there is any threat to the public at this time.
