PLYMOUTH, Ind. -- A 5k and one-mile fun run brought awareness to the community about those with Down Syndrome.
"Our goal with this event is to bring awareness to our community of those with Down syndrome. Last year, we were able to raise almost $20,000 to put back for the therapists in our schools," said Kayla Pittman, the event organizer.
Pittman said nearly 600 people signed up this year, up from about 350 at last year's first event.
The one-mile fun run was two laps on a paved path in front of the park's hill and Pittman said organizers made sure the route was wheelchair accessible.
"We made sure to make that path all something that could be wheelchair inclusive. My own son right now is in a wheelchair, so that mattered to me."
Last year's event raised just under $20,000.
Pittman said that money bought every item on local school therapists' wish lists.
"We purchased items off their wish list, and we bought everything off their wish list and now the kids in our community are able to use those items every day."
This year's proceeds will support Special Olympics in the community.
They will also go to Brantley's Believers, a new nonprofit Pittman founded.
The event also featured food trucks, ice cream, and all sorts of activities for kids.
