Man arrested after fleeing deputies, abandoning Mustang in cornfield
Starke County Sheriff\'s Department STARKE COUNTY, Ind. -- On March 6, the Starke County Sheriff's Department witnessed a red Ford Mustang with a black roof, and a temporary Indiana registration accelerate in speed.
Deputies attempted to catch up to the vehicle, but the vehicle continued to speed on south 800 East.
Deputy Obermiller continued to pursue the vehicle on gravel roads and further observed the car disregarded a stop sign.
Deputy Obermiller then observed the vehicle make an abrupt turn and go off of the road into a cornfield.
The driver of the Mustang was further observed driving toward a wood line. Deputy Obermiller then found the vehicle abandoned.
Deputies attempted to make contact with the driver of the vehicle, when a male was observed running east to west from the wood line crossing south 800 East.
The male was later apprehended and taken into custody by Deputy Leonhardt. The male was identified as Mark Elder.
Deputies performed a search of the vehicle, and several items observed in plain view were identified as belonging to Mark Elder.
Mark Elder was transported to the Starke County Jail.
The Starke County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by officers from the Knox Police Department and the Indiana State Police.
