SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A string of violence in downtown South Bend with three separate incidents involving gunfire took place on Tuesday night. South Bend police state that there is no reason to believe the three incidents are connected, or that there is still any present danger to the public. The incident took place on the Colfax Bridge just before 10:00 p.m.

"I believed he was going to kill my family," says Wayne Hubbard, former South Bend social justice advocate.

Hubbard says his fourteen-year-old daughter, and his fiancé, were fishing on the river near the Colfax Bridge, and packing up for the night.

"Me and my fourteen-year-old daughter and my fiancé were approached by three men, one who had a gun, the other had stayed back about twenty feet, he inquired about his brother being assaulted down by the river, he wouldn't take that I wasn't the guy who did it for an answer, even though his brother was telling him that I was not the guy," says Hubbard.

He claims the man with the gun was accusing him of assaulting a homeless person, while he and his family sat in their car.

From there, Hubbard says things escalated quickly.

"He said quit being a b****, and say it was him, point him out so I can lay him down, or blow him down, and that's when I grabbed the gun out of my fiancé's lap, because I knew he was going to shoot me, and when he turned around and raised his arm and began trying to shoot me, I shot him," said Hubbard.

Hubbard tells ABC57 he believes he acted in self defense.

"I believed he was going to kill my family, he told me he was going to kill my family, he was clearly under the influence of something, and I believed him, and he was acting in a way that I didn't have a choice. When a guy is aiming a gun around, and he's threatening to kill you, your daughter, your fiancé, and he's looking back and telling the guy to point at you so he can kill you, and then he's hyping himself up," says Hubbard.

South Bend police tell ABC57 the man shot is in critical but stable condition. SBPD cannot confirm Hubbard is the shooter, as they can't release any information about that without a determination from the prosecutor's office.
