UPDATE TWO: Copies of a United States Postal Service Industry Alert cover the windows across the front of the South Bend Edison Park Post Office stating the location's operations have been moved to the South Bend Main Office at 424 S. Michigan St.

This notice comes a week after a fire broke out in the location's mail sorting area.

The notices on the building state, "Re-occupation of South Bend - Edison Park, IN Post Office, is unknown at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers."

USPS gave the following statement after ABC57 News requested an interview regarding the Edison Park office's future:

"The Postal Service continues to assess the situation at the South Bend Edison Park Post Office. At this time, there is no information available regarding when the facility will reopen.

The P.O. Box section and collection boxes located outside the Edison Park facility are currently unavailable. Edison Park P.O. Box customers may pick up their mail at the South Bend Main Post Office, located at 424 S. Michigan St.

Customers may also access retail products and services at the South Bend Main Post Office.

The Postal Service appreciates the patience and understanding of our customers as we work to address the situation."

UPDATE: The South Bend Fire Department reports crews responded to the post office at 2417 Edison Rd. around 4:30 a.m., Tuesday, after a postal worker reported a fire.

Crews arrived to find black smoke and a small fire. The fire was under control within 10 minutes.

Firefighters then worked to get rid of the remaining smoke from the building.

A light fixture in the mail sorting area was determined to be the cause of the fire.

ORIGINAL STORY: SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- On Tuesday morning, fire crews responded to what's being called a 'small' fire at the post office on Edison Road in South Bend.

A call came in around 4:30 Tuesday morning. ABC57 was told on scene there were no reported injuries or fatalities, and an employee noticed the fire before calling the fire department.

Employees on scene told us the mail office will be closed, but people can still drop off mail outside that mail office and P.O.  boxes will be open. They are awaiting postal inspectors to see if the whole building has to be closed.

As of 7 am, fire crews were not on the scene anymore.
