Local colleges, universities address effects of Canvas cyberattack

MGN

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- ABC57 reached out to several local and regional universities and colleges on Friday to find out if any were affected by the recent Canvas cyberattack.

Some schools suffered minor disruptions while others don’t utilize the Canvas program.

ABC57 heard back from the following schools:

Indiana University South Bend:

"Canvas is experiencing a global outage that affects Indiana University and other educational institutions. More updates and instructions will be shared as they are available."

The following was sent to IUSB staff:

"Dear Faculty & Staff,

We know many of you have already received communications from UITS regarding the ongoing Canvas outage. We are aware of the disruption this is causing for our campus community and want you to know that we are in close communication with university leadership.

We want to reiterate some key points below:

  • We encourage faculty to stay in touch with your students. As a reminder, you can access your class rolls, including email addresses, as described in this Knowledge Base article. Students have been asked to carefully monitor their email for any course-specific updates from you.
  • The Keep Teaching website has resources to help you maintain course continuity during the outage. The site is being updated regularly as new guidance becomes available.
  • Our University Center for Excellence in Teaching (UCET) is also available to assist you in figuring out how to best continue your work during this time.
  • The grade reporting deadline is now Thursday, May 14, at 8:00 p.m.
  • For real-time updates on Canvas availability, check status.iu.edu.

We will share additional updates and resources as soon as they become available. Thank you for all you are doing to support our students, today and every day.

Brian & Jill "

University of Michigan:

"Canvas access has been restored across all University of Michigan campuses following the security incident involving Instructure, the vendor that provides the Canvas learning management system.

Information and Technology Services temporarily restricted access to Canvas while teams investigated the issue, implemented security measures, and worked with Instructure to restore services.

Users should now be able to log back into Canvas and resume normal activity. Some integrations or connected services may continue stabilizing as restoration activities are completed.

As a reminder, if you entered your username and password into an unfamiliar Canvas login page during the incident, we strongly recommend that you change your password immediately. If you use the same password on other sites, we also recommend changing the password anywhere else it is in use.

Please continue to remain alert for suspicious emails, login prompts, or phishing attempts that may reference Canvas or university systems. Do not click suspicious links, open unexpected attachments, or share passwords or authentication codes. If you receive a message that seems unusual or suspicious, please verify it through official channels or report it to [email protected].

ITS teams will continue monitoring systems and working with Instructure as additional recovery and security review activities continue."

Saint Mary's College:

"Blackboard, rather than Canvas, is the College's official learning management system. The College's IT experts are nonetheless closely monitoring the situation given many partner institutions and vendors utilize Canvas."

Purdue University:

"After an initial assessment, the nationwide Canvas cyberattack appears to have minimal impact on Purdue University and Purdue Global, as Canvas is not our main learning management system. We are still working on a review to ensure we properly identify any potential points of exposure."

Holy Cross College: Does not have Canvas

Southwestern Michigan College: Not affected

Goshen College:

"We are fortunate in that we use Moodle as our classroom management software, and we don’t use Canvas for anything at an institutional level."

Michigan State University:

"We continue to monitor this situation. At this time, there is no indication that Michigan State University's enterprise learning management system has been affected by this incident."
