LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. – An Indiana State Trooper made an unexpected delivery last Friday when a woman went into labor on the Toll Road.

On January at 12:30 p.m., Trooper Thomas Maymi was working on the Indiana Toll Road when he spotted a male driver quickly exit his semi-truck and run across the highway, asking the Trooper for assistance.

The man said his wife was pregnant and might be in labor.

Trp. Maymi contacted dispatch for an ambulance and went to check on the pregnant woman with the man.

Upon entering the truck, the woman said she was in labor, and Trp. Maymi discovered there wasn’t enough time to transport her to the hospital.

Maymi assisted the woman with her contractions until LaPorte County EMS arrived.

Two minutes after paramedics arrived, the baby was delivered.

Both mom and baby were transported to a local hospital upon delivery.

The parents named their newborn boy Malaki Thomas Robertson, his middle name taken after Trp. Maymi.

Trp. Maymi said he was glad he was in the right place at the right time and wished the couple congratulations.

Parents Shaniqua Traywick and Carl Robertson said they were surprised by baby Malaki’s grand entrance, and Traywick expressed gratitude to Trp. Maymi for helping with the delivery, saying, “we were all troopers that day!”
