Indiana State Police investigating officer-involved shooting in Gary
ABC 57 GARY, Ind. -- The Indiana State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting near the Metro station at Broadway and Fourth Avenue in Gary.
Gary Police Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Office officers responded to a report of an armed security officer exhibiting unusual and erratic behavior. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation. At approximately 11:20 p.m., a confrontation occurred between the suspect and responding officers, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.
The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Lake County Coroner’s Office has identified the individual.
The initial investigation determined that six Gary police officers and three Lake County sheriff’s officers discharged their firearms during the incident. In accordance with agency policy, all officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
At this stage of the investigation, Indiana State Police will not identify the officers involved.
The investigation remains ongoing.
