Indiana Dunes beaches reopened day after sheen spotted on the water

The shoreline and waters along the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk Beach were closed on Thursday due to a sheen in the water, according to the Indiana Dunes National Park . The beaches were reopened on Friday.

US Steel provided the following information about the sheen seen on Thursday.

This morning, we identified a sheen in the Burns Waterway outside of our Midwest Plant. We have shut down the rolling mills, as we investigate. The sheen has been contained by an existing boom, and vacuum trucks are removing any accumulation. At this time the leak appears to be contained, and we are not observing any sheen outside the boomed area. We are working with IDEM, and notifications have been made to other relevant authorities.

The beaches closed on September 27 and reopened two days later after a discharge from the US Steel plant.
