NOW: Inaugural ceremony honors Korean War veterans at Battell Park

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- An inaugural ceremony was held at Battell Park in Mishawaka to honor Korean War Veterans and the generations of military personnel who have served in South Korea and surrounding countries over the past seven decades.

The event, organized by Mishawaka VFW Post 360 and American Legion Post 357, drew a small gathering at the park's historic bandshell.
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, more than 6.8 million Americans served during the Korean War Era, and more than 54,000 died in service.

A joint firing detail from VFW Post 360 carried out a ceremonial Three-Volley Rifle Salute, immediately followed by a live performance of Taps. The ceremony was an effort to bring public awareness to the Korean War, a conflict long referred to as "the Forgotten War."  Among those in attendance was Norm Heaton, a Korean War veteran who served directly in Korea as a Marine.

"Very heartwarming to see all these people remember the forgotten war. I, for one, will never forget it," said Heaton.

"We remember and will never forget their great sacrifices and the great numbers that gave their life in the Korean War," said Benjamin Hoops, the Assistant to Indiana President of Michiana Region of Korean Veteran's Association.

Also recognized was Julius Vlaeminck, a Korean War veteran who was stationed in Japan. "I have memories of people that have served there and gave the ultimate cost. Well, I think it's a great honor to be recognized it makes me very proud to be an American," Both men were among those honored during the certificate ceremony.

The ceremony included historical presentations, a taekwondo demonstration, and formal certificate recognition for local veterans.
