MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- The Humane Society of St. Joseph County is seeking help from the community to adopt or foster approximately 36 shelter dogs.

The dogs need to be completely clear by noon on Aug. 18, as a new HVAC unit is set to be installed and maintenance on the floors will start on Aug. 19.

Without adequate airflow and air conditioning the adoption dog center needs to be temporarily emptied.

Those interested in adopting must complete an adoption application so staff can review and schedule appointments for families to meet and take home a dog.

The Humane Society strongly encourages applications to be submitted by Aug. 13.

If you can't adopt but would still like to help, providing a temporary foster home is another option.

If fostering a home is an option, families are asked to commit to caring for a shelter dog through at least Aug. 24, allowing sufficient time for the HVAC installation and floor maintenance to be completed.

Adoption fees will be waived off for all dogs through Aug. 18.

All adoptable dogs are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, and microchipped before going home.

The Humane Society will provide foster families with the supplies needed to care for their foster dog, including food, bedding and toys, collar, harness, leash, and any necessary medications.

Foster applicants should complete the Humane Society’s foster application by Thursday, so staff have time to coordinate placements before the Aug.18 deadline.
