UPDATE: FACT identifies deceased driver, reveals cause of three-vehicle crash at Ironwood Drive and Jackson Road

UPDATE TWO: The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team reports the investigation into the deadly three-vehicle crash which occurred around 1:40 p.m. on Jan. 2 at Ironwood Drive and Jackson Road is ongoing.

The driver pronounced dead on-scene has now been identified as 59-year-old Michael Garrage of South Bend.

FACT officials say the initial investigation determined Garrage suffered a medical emergency just before the crash occurred.

The other two drivers involved were treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

UPDATE: The scene has been cleared and the road reopened as of 5:38 p.m.

ORIGINAL STORY: ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- One person is dead, and two others are injured after a serious three-vehicle crash.

Police were called to the crash just before 1:30 p.m. on Friday to Ironwood Drive and Jackson Road, near the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds and South Bend city line.

Three vehicles were involved in the incident, with one car crashing through a fence and ending up in a nearby homeowner's yard. One driver was pronounced dead on the scene. Another driver and a passenger were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, while the third driver was cleared at the scene. Police are still working to notify the family of the driver who was killed.

The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team is now investigating the incident. Ironwood Drive remains closed between Jackson and the U.S. 20 Bypass while officials work.
