ABC 57

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Police Department Fatal Crash Team (FACT) says they are continuing an investigation into a fatal one-car crash from early Sunday morning in the area of W. Indiana Avenue/Benham Avenue.

Officers say that about 2:30 a.m. on April 21, an officer on patrol observed a Pontiac Torrent that had crashed into a light pole near the intersection of W. Indiana and Benham Avenues.

The vehicle contained two males, a passenger and driver, and when the Elkhart Fire Department arrived on scene, they assisted in getting the men free from the car before medics took them both to a local hospital.

"The front seat passenger, identified as Montrell Curtis, 32 years old of Elkhart, was pronounced deceased at the hospital shortly thereafter," EPD said. "The driver, identified as Walter Holmes, 27 years old of Elkhart, remained in critical condition at last information."

Police say the cause of the crash is still under investigation, and anyone with information can call the Elkhart Police Department at 574-389-4767.
