City of Buchanan to tear down long-standing feed mill starting Wednesday

City of Buchanan

BUCHANAN, Mich. -- The City of Buchanan announced on Tuesday, via social media post, that it has partnered with Berrien County to secure a grand that will fund the demolition of the iconic, yet long-abandoned structure.

The grant funds are coming from the State Land Bank, and the city did not disclose how much the demolition will cost.

The Old Feed Mill sits at 111 Railroad Street, and demolition will include the old Baroda Tire building at 708 S. Red Bud Trail.

"The demolition of the building is scheduled to begin on April 23rd and is expected to be completed with four to six weeks," the city said. "There will be heavy construction in the area during the project."

Once the demolition is complete and the debris is cleared, grass seed will be spread across the lot.

"The city has plans to pursue the redevelopment of the parcel through a request for proposal process that will be publicly advertised," city officials said. "The city envisions a new mixed use redevelopment project at the site that will bring new residents and jobs to Buchanan."

Any questions regarding the project can be directed to City of Buchanan Community Development Director, Richard Murphy at [email protected]
