Child takes car, crashes into pond outside St. Jude Catholic Church

UPDATE: South Bend police say they were notified just before 7:30 a.m. of a motor vehicle theft that occurred in the River Park area. Officers were told a 10-year-old boy had stolen a family member’s SUV.

"As officers were responding, SBPD received several calls about the SUV driving recklessly along Ironwood Drive, including the report of a hit-and-run at Ironwood Drive and Pleasant Street," SBPD said. "The vehicle then travelled outside city limits, and officers received a report of a mailbox that had been struck near Fellows Street and Jackson Road in St. Joseph County.

Authorities say a South Bend Police Officer attempted to stop the vehicle near Johnson Road and Fellows Street, but the suspect vehicle continued, drove over the grass at St. Jude Catholic Church on Johnson Road, and into a pond on the church’s property.

The juvenile exited the vehicle on his own and was transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and no serious injuries have been reported to any other person.

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Police are investigating after a child crashed a car into a retention pond.

The crash happened Monday morning on Johnson Road outside of St. Jude Catholic Church.

Police were first called just after 7:26 a.m. but it's still not clear what lead up to the crash.

The car was towed away just before 8:40 a.m. and there is no impact to the church or school that operates there.
