Berrien Springs remains undefeated in conference play, wins 22-20 against Dowagiac
BERRIEN SPRINGS, Ind. -- It was a hard-fought battle, what a nail biter between these two teams.
Just two minutes into the game, Shamrocks senior quarterback Micah McFarland sets up the play and hands it off to junior running back Calvin White. White takes it to the right side, finding an opening and going for the touchdown. The extra point is good to bring Berrien Springs within 7-0 early on.
But the Chieftains wasted no time responding. At 1st and 10, Dowagiac connected for a quick touchdown, putting the pressure right back on the Shamrocks.
However, their extra point attempt was blocked, which leaves them just shy, keeping the score close.
Back on offense, Calvin White wasn’t done. Fighting through defenders, he powered through for his second touchdown of the game, and once again, the extra point was good.
Now onto the third quarter where the Dowagiac tightened the gap with a hard-fought touchdown fighting through traffic. And the two-point conversion was successful, making it a two-point game 22-20.
That would be all she wrote for the chieftains, as their four-game winning streak comes to an end. Berrien Springs remains undefeated in the Lakeland Conference.
After the game, Berrien Springs football coach Ben Iliff and senior running back Andru Gonzalez both agreed it was a hard-fought battle but are happy to walk away with the victory.
"It was hard fought and a back-and-forth game. They played hard, we played hard. Luckily, we made a couple of plays in the end to make the difference," Illiff said.
