ANGOLA, Ind. -- This week’s ABC57 Road Trip brings the need for speed! Located in Pokagon State Park near Angola, Indiana, lies the only toboggan run in the entire state. The quarter mile ice track has been around since 1935 and a second track was built five years later. The slides are refrigerated, so they can stay open even when there isn’t any snow!
The process is simple. Climb to the top of the 30-foot tower, hop on to the sled, but more importantly, hold on... then get ready to scream! The vertical drop is 90 feet.
“Anyone who has never been out here, has to do it,” says Nick Brown, Assistant Property Manager of Pokagon State Park. “30 miles an hour does not seem like much when you are in a car, but you are in on a plastic sled and open air it is quick”
And why not make a little friendly competition out of the experience? Visitors can catch a glimpse of their speed as they make their way down the hill. Think you have what it takes to be the top scorer? The greatest speed of all time is 42 miles per hour.
