The 52nd annual Steve's Run returns to Dowagiac

Southwestern Michigan College

DOWAGIAC, Mich. -- The 52nd running of Steve's Run is back, just before Dowagiac's Summer Festival.

On July 17, at 6 p.m. racers will continue the yearly tradition to run through Dowagiac, a golf course, a cemetery, and the Southwestern Michigan College wooded trails.

Steve's Run is in honor of Steven Briegel, the son of former SMC president, David Briegel.

Steven battled cancer for five and a half years but lost in 1990 at the age of 22.

“What makes Steve's Run so special is the way it connects people for a greater purpose. Every participant, volunteer and sponsor plays a role in supporting cancer research and helping students pursue their educational goals,” said Kelly Williams, Regional Manager at Honor Credit Union.

The event has been able to raise more than $300,000 in the last 16 years for cancer research and student scholarships.

The runs will be a 5k, 10k, and a family fun run.

“We’re thankful for our donors and participants who help us to continue to put on this community event to raise money for both cancer research and the David and Steven Briegel Memorial Scholarship,” said Manager of Development and Executive Director of the SMC Foundation, Emily Schorock. “We’re grateful to continue the tradition.”
