UPDATE: Suspect dead after officer-involved shooting on South Bend's north side

UPDATE TWO: The St. Joseph County Police Department says the suspect, 35-year-old Jujaun Bates, succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. No officers were injured during the incident.

UPDATE: South Bend Police Department responded to a 911 call for an unwanted person on South Bend's north side near Corby Boulevard and Howard Street around 9:20 p.m., Tuesday.

According to SBPD Chief Scott Ruszkowski, the 911 caller had a protective order against the suspect.

Suspect exited the vehicle with a firearm before officers attempted to detain the suspect for several blocks until ultimately shots were fired.

It is unclear who initiated gunfire at this time. though the Mishawaka Police Department confirmed that multiple officers fired their guns.

Police said officers used other methods before the shooting but declined to provide further details.

The suspect was taken to the hospital where their condition is unknown at this time.

MPD and St. Joseph County Police Department will be handling the investigation.
