8-year-old dead after LaGrange County house fire

LAGRANGE, Ind. --- An 8 year-old Topeka girl is dead after being trapped on the second floor of her home during a fire.

It happened Friday night just after 7 p.m. Lagrange County police said they tried to locate and remove the child before fire personnel got to the scene but, unfortunately, they were unsuccessful because of the excessive smoke and heat.

Firefighters were eventually about to rescue the girl. She was taken to Parkview Lagrange hospital and then airlifted to Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis where she later died from her injuries.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire at this time.
