21-year-old male killed in two vehicle crash on U.S 31 in Berrien County

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- Berrien County emergency personnel responded to a two-vehicle crash on US 31 bypass northbound near mile marker 7 in Niles Township, with witnesses stating one vehicle flipped over with a person trapped inside.
When authorities arrived, they could not gain access to the vehicle that was on its roof, blocking both lanes of northbound traffic.
Niles Township Fire arrived and were able to gain access inside a 2012 Lincoln MK-Z and locate the sole occupant of the vehicle, 21-year-old Cole Toney of Saint Joseph.
Crash investigators were called to the scene to determine the cause of the crash and process evidence. Witnesses stated the 2012 Lincoln was traveling northbound at a very high rate of speed and tried to pass another vehicle on the right shoulder.
After passing the other vehicle, the Lincoln was getting back into the right line and struck the front of a 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage, causing it to run off the roadway and into a ditch and striking a 3-foot diameter concrete bridge support, then shooting back into traffic and landed on the front hood of the Mitsubishi.
The Lincoln finally coming to rest on its hood.
The driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries. The crash remains under investigation and it appears speed was a factor in the crash.
