NILES, Mich. -- The 14-year-old victim of a shooting in Niles late Thursday night has died from his injuries.
At 11:03 p.m., officers from the Niles Police Department were dispatched to the Arbor Trails Apartments on 5th Street following several calls of shots fired.
One caller said a person had been shot.
When they arrived on the scene, they found the male victim lying on the ground with at least one gunshot wound.
Shortly after being transported to the hospital, the victim was pronounced dead.
Witnesses who were walking with the victim right before the incident said a light-colored pickup truck drove past them and then came back towards them before stopping.
Multiple people got out of the truck and, after a short confrontation, one of them pulled out a handgun and shot the victim, reports said. The suspects then left the scene in the truck.
Investigators believe the suspects knew the victim and the shooting was not random, according to reports.
The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information is urged to call the Niles Detective Bureau at 269-683-0404 or make an anonymous tip through tipsoft.com or Michiana Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP.
