South Bend Police investigating possible child abduction

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -

South Bend Police are looking for a 7-year-old white female with black hair, wearing a pink shirt and jean shorts in the area of Kennedy Park, near 2500 Frederickson Street.

The child also has light highlights in her hair and sparkles on her sandals.

St. Joseph County dispatch says someone called in and said they saw a girl being abducted by an adult male.

Police said the little girl was led away against her will from an alleyway between two homes near Meade and Prast.

The suspect is described as a black male with gray facial hair.

In a press conference, police said they don't have enough to go on to issue an Amber Alert. There are certain criteria that must be met in order for one to be issued.

They added they have not heard from any parents that their child is missing, so they have very little to go on right now.

Police searched the homes of area sex offenders who matched the description of the suspect, but nothing was found.

There are approximately 15 officers canvassing the area and children in the area were interviewed.

If you have any information in this case, call 9-1-1.

“If they know of her whereabouts, call 9-1-1 right away. We don’t want to mess around with leaving a tip or anything like that. If you know where this girl is or who she is, call 9-1-1 and we’ll get to the bottom of this. If it’s a mistake or somebody that thought they saw something and that wasn’t really what was happening, we’ll stand down. Right now we’re exhausting a lot of effort and manpower to try to find this girl. And if it’s some simple explanation that’s all we need to know and we’ll go back into service,” said Captain Phil Trent of the South Bend Police Department.
