ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Volunteers and workers at the local humane society will be working more hours in the near future to help alleviate overcrowding issues at the shelter.

"Due to an overwhelming number of animals in our shelter, the Humane Society of St. Joseph County is extending its hours to make adoption, fostering, and volunteering more accessible," the HSSJC said. "The lobby and cattery will now be open for visitors from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. starting [May 2] and every Thursday for the month of May."

Officials say that during this time, the dog team staff will be holding public playtimes with the dogs, offering potential adopters an opportunity to interact with and get to know them better before giving them a forever home.

The HSSJC says that to encourage adoptions and reduce shelter overcrowding, they are offering a special rate: all adult dogs over one year old are available for just $20 until May 20.

"In addition to adoption, staff members will be on hand to discuss fostering and volunteering, providing guidance to those interested in supporting the shelter in these important ways," the HSSJC said.
