Community gathers for 9/11 stair climb
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- While Veterans Day was officially on Sunday Nov. 11, many events continued in Michiana the day after.
One event held in South Bend was a recognition ceremony held by Miller's Vet Center.
Monday afternoon, the group held a ceremony for veterans who died while protecting the United States and had not had any recognition at their burial.
Mayor Pete Buttigieg, a veteran himself, said it is important to have both Memorial Day and Veterans Day because they should each highlight different struggles of service members.
"One difference between this and Memorial Day is that this is not only about loss but we acknowledge sacrifice. We also acknowledge the fact that all those who have loved somebody who has served, has also served, “ said Mayor Buttigieg.
Miller's Vets gave American flags to each of the families of fallen soldiers who did not have any formal military recognition at their funeral services.
